Recent research by Rightmove the property website has found that consumers are confused by the “Help to Buy” initiative and has called on the Government to clarify the rules after their research discovered over 33% of first time buyers do not understand the scheme. Nearly a quarter wrongly thought that facilities only apply to new-build homes and some two fifths incorrectly believed it is only for first time buyers. It is in fact the equity loans that are only available to first time buyers whilst the stipulations for the mortgage guarantee are available to all, subject to certain conditions. Things can change so much in just twelve months. In the last few weeks of 2012 average house prices across the UK were flat or slowly falling, except in areas of central London where the market is fuelled by activity from overseas investors. In March 2013 George Osborne launched the Help to Buy scheme and this has had a marked effect on the housing market. In their recent market analysis Knight Frank has forecast an average 7% growth in UK prices (based on the Nationwide index) for 2013 and 2014 and 5% in 2015.
